Councillor Wayne Erasmus Faces Calls to Resign After Animal Welfare Conviction

Wayne Erasmus, a 66‑year‑old councillor on Cwmaman and Ammanford town councils and two community councils in neighbouring Swansea, pleaded guilty in June at Swansea Crown Court to three animal‑welfare offences after pigs and goats in his care were discovered in appalling conditions inside windowless shipping containers. The animals were seized and several rescued pigs later died.

Following the conviction, Cwmaman town councillors recorded a vote of no confidence and agreed that the mayor should write to Erasmus urging him to consider his position. Ammanford Town Council’s mayor also sent a letter asking him to resign. Councillors were advised that any standards or code‑of‑conduct complaint must be handled through the appropriate external channels. In mitigation, Erasmus’s barrister cited mental‑health and neuro‑diversity issues and personal hardships as factors influencing the case.
