Councilor Pedro Dornas' Car Burned in Nova Lima, Brazil
On the night of 5 August 2026, a 1976 Volkswagen Fusca belonging to Nova Lima councilor Pedro Dornas was set on fire in front of his home in the Vila Operária neighbourhood. Security cameras captured a man in a helmet approaching the vehicle with a gasoline can before the flames erupted. The incident caused no injuries, but the car, which held sentimental value and was used as a symbol of Dornas' mandate, was completely destroyed.
Dornas, a member of the Avante party, described the act as "political violence" and suggested it was linked to his work in the municipal chamber. He called for respect for democratic institutions and said the investigation by the Civil and Military Police was ongoing, with no arrests made at the time.
