Count Rudi, Marbella tourism pioneer, passes away
Rudolf Schönburg-Glauchau, widely known as Count Rudi, has passed away in Marbella at the age of 94. A prominent figure in the development of tourism on Spain’s Costa del Sol, he is remembered as a key architect of the region's golden era.
Born into German nobility, Schönburg-Glauchau arrived in Málaga in 1956 after losing his family possessions during World War II. He reinvented himself in the hospitality sector, starting as a receptionist and eventually becoming the director of the iconic Marbella Club, a project he shared with Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe.
Marbella Mayor Ángeles Muñoz praised his legacy, stating that he leaves an “indelible mark” on the municipality and describing him as a bulwark for the city's image, tourism, and economy. His contributions were previously recognized by the city, including an induction to the Puerto Banús Walk of Fame.
