Counter-UAS technology evolves to meet rising drone threats
The landscape of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) is driving rapid advancements in counter-drone technologies. As commercial and military drones become more autonomous and accessible, they present increasing security challenges for critical infrastructure, aviation, and military installations. The Federal Aviation Administration reported over 400 drone sightings near aircraft and airports between July and September 2024.
In response to these evolving threats, the global counter-UAS market is projected to grow significantly, potentially reaching $27.98 billion by 2032. Technologies such as BAE Systems’ APKWS laser-guidance kit are being utilized to transform standard 70mm rockets into precision-guided munitions. These kits provide a cost-effective method for air-to-air, air-to-surface, and surface-to-air roles, offering a scalable solution to counter low-cost drone attacks.
The U.S. Air Force is also working to integrate APKWS laser-guided rockets onto the F-15E Strike Eagle to enhance its counter-UAS capabilities through expedited flight testing and operational demonstration.
