Counterfeit currency alerts issued for merchants in Spain and Mexico

Authorities and merchants in different regions are increasing vigilance due to a rise in counterfeit currency circulation.

In Tenerife, the Spanish National Police has warned citizens and businesses, particularly in the hospitality and retail sectors, about the increased presence of fake banknotes. To detect fraud, officials recommend the “touch, tilt, and look” method: checking for rough relief textures, ensuring the denomination reflects in the light, and verifying watermarks and security threads when held against light. The Bank of Spain notes that if a banknote is found to be counterfeit, the owner may lose its value, though legitimate notes identified during analysis can be exchanged.

In Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, street vendors are also reinforcing security measures to protect their income. Local merchant representatives report that there is heightened concern regarding 200 and 500 peso notes. To prevent losses, many vendors are utilizing detection tools such as counterfeit detector pens and ultraviolet lamps.
