Coupang reports Q2 loss but active customers rebound to pre‑breach levels

Coupang Inc. posted second‑quarter revenue of about $8.9 billion (≈13.3 trillion won), a 4 % year‑on‑year increase, but recorded an operating loss of roughly $570 million (≈8.3 trillion won). The loss reflects a large government fine of about 6.25 trillion won related to a personal‑data breach that occurred late last year, as well as heightened marketing spend aimed at winning back customers.

Despite the loss, the company said its active customer base rose to 24.7 million, up 3 % from the same period a year earlier and matching the pre‑breach peak. Chairman Kim Bum‑seok and CFO Anand highlighted that many shoppers who had left are returning, driven by low‑price policies, free rocket delivery and other promotions. Monthly payment volume also hit a record, with estimated card transactions of 7.29 trillion won, a 6 % increase, and Coupang Eats saw a 21 % rise.

The results show that while the breach and associated penalties have strained profitability, consumer demand for Coupang’s services remains strong.
