Coupang reports 642.3 billion won operating loss in Q3

Coupang Inc reported an operating loss of 642.3 billion won (approximately 450 million USD) for the third quarter, marking the third consecutive quarter of losses. While revenue grew by 11% on a constant currency basis to 9.96 billion USD, profitability was heavily impacted by several factors.

A significant portion of the loss is attributed to approximately 354 billion won in one-time costs related to a major fire at a fulfillment center in Incheon this past July. Additionally, the company continues to face the aftermath of a large-scale data breach that affected millions of customers, leading to increased marketing expenses to retain and re-engage users.

Coupang founder and CEO Bom Suk Kim stated that these issues are temporary headwinds rather than structural problems. He noted that while some customers have not yet returned following the data incident, Wow membership numbers have reached record highs. The company expects product commerce margins to recover toward historical levels by mid-2027 as marketing investments taper and logistics automation improves efficiency.
