Coupang logistics center fire likely caused by lithium battery

The National Forensic Service (NFS) has released preliminary findings regarding the massive fire that burned for over 109 hours at a Coupang logistics center in Seoknam-dong, Incheon, in July. The NFS suggests that the fire may have been caused by a lithium battery, likely from a product such as a desk fan, fishing water pump, or vacuum sealer.

Due to the intensity of the fire, the specific product containing the battery could not be identified as the ignition point was completely destroyed. CCTV footage indicates the fire originated on the second shelf of a three-tier rack located on the sixth floor of the building.

Incheon police have been investigating an unidentified individual on suspicion of arson. However, current investigations show that the facility's fire suppression systems operated normally and that regular safety inspections and training were conducted. If no illegal activities are discovered during the final stages of the investigation, police plan to close the case without forwarding it to the prosecution. Further detailed forensic examinations are expected to confirm the exact cause.
