Coupang shows recovery in prepaid balances and user metrics

Coupang's key performance indicators are showing signs of recovery following a previous personal information leak incident. Coupang Pay's prepaid balance reached approximately 119.4 billion won at the end of September, marking its third consecutive quarterly increase. While this figure is still roughly 3.3% lower than the peak recorded in the third quarter of last year, it indicates a steady upward trend from the lows seen earlier this year.

User engagement metrics are also rebounding. Monthly active users (MAU) for the Coupang app have increased, with some reports indicating a rise to approximately 35.65 million users, surpassing levels seen immediately after the data breach. Additionally, credit and debit card transaction volumes have seen a recovery, with monthly totals exceeding 5 trillion won in July.

Despite the recovery in user numbers and prepaid balances, the company faces ongoing challenges regarding profitability. Coupang Inc. has noted that while major indicators are returning to normal trajectories, achieving pre-incident levels of profitability in its product commerce segment may take until mid-2027.
