Coupeville reflects on its history with Practical Magic
The town of Coupeville, Washington, remains deeply connected to its history as a filming location for the movie ‘Practical Magic’. During the original production, the town underwent significant changes, including painting buildings along Front Street white to mimic a New England aesthetic and closing streets for filming.
Local residents participated in the production as extras, and local businesses, such as Toby’s Tavern, became central to the crew's experience. While the iconic Owens house was a shell built on San Juan Island with interiors filmed on a Hollywood soundstage, the production left a lasting impression on the community. Despite the town's significant contribution to the original film, the sequel was filmed in a different location.
