Court grants provisional liberty to mother in Viamão child death case
A court in Rio Grande do Sul has granted provisional liberty to Mayanna Angelina Rodgers, the mother of three-year-old Oliver Grayson, who died following an assault by his father in Viamão. The decision by the 1st Criminal Court of the Jury and Criminal Execution of the Viamão District replaces her preventive detention with several precautionary measures.
Rodgers faces four counts of torture by omission involving the deceased child and his three siblings, though homicide charges against her have been dismissed. Under the court's order, she must wear an electronic ankle monitor, observe a curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays and days off, and surrender her passport within 24 hours. She is also prohibited from contacting or approaching her children without judicial authorization.
The child's father, 33-year-old American missionary D’andre Grayson, remains in preventive detention. He is charged with qualified homicide and four counts of torture. Investigations indicate the child was assaulted on July 5, allegedly because he failed to greet his father, resulting in severe traumatic brain injury and death on July 8.
