Court of Audit to decide on Greek pensioners' solidarity contribution calculation
The Court of Audit is scheduled to convene on October 7 to decide on a landmark case regarding the calculation of the Pensioners' Solidarity Contribution (EAS) in Greece. The legal dispute centers on whether the contribution rate should be applied to a pensioner's total pension amount or only to the portion that exceeds the threshold of 1,468.02 euros.
Under the current system set for January 1, 2026, once a pension exceeds the threshold, a coefficient ranging from 3% to 14% is applied to the entire sum. A pensioner has challenged this method, questioning its constitutionality. The General Commissioner of the Court of Audit has submitted a recommendation favoring a change, suggesting the contribution should only apply to the amount exceeding the limit.
A ruling in favor of this change could significantly reduce deductions for high-earning pensioners. For instance, on a 2,000 euro pension with a 7% rate, the contribution would drop from 140 euros to 37 euros if calculated only on the excess. However, the decision carries fiscal weight as the EAS is a key revenue source for the Social Security Fund.
