University of Sarajevo ordered to restore Sebija Izetbegović's academic titles

The Municipal Court in Sarajevo has issued a first-instance verdict in favor of Sebija Izetbegović, overturning decisions made by the University of Sarajevo (UNSA) to revoke her master's degree. The court ruled that the decisions made by the UNSA Senate and the Rector in March 2023 were unlawful.

In its reasoning, the court noted that the university's actions followed a “long media campaign initiated outside the academic community” aimed at undermining Izetbegović's academic status. The revocation of her master's degree had previously led to the loss of her doctoral title and her position as a full professor at the Faculty of Medicine.

As a result of the ruling, the University of Sarajevo is ordered to compensate Izetbegović for legal costs amounting to 23,428 KM within 30 days. The Party of Democratic Action (SDA) welcomed the verdict, stating it confirms that the proceedings against her were politically motivated and intended for personal discredit.
