Turkey sees series of violent incidents and high‑profile court cases

In Bodrum, attorney Buse Bacaru reported being physically assaulted by famous hairdresser Ethem Akçelik while trying to document his alleged infidelity during a divorce case. The incident, involving a phone being snatched and the lawyer’s throat being squeezed, prompted a police complaint and a criminal investigation.

In Kocaeli’s İzmit district, a courtroom drama escalated when Emrah Çeliksoy, who had previously been injured in a domestic‑violence dispute, was killed by his former wife Sümeyye M. as she stabbed him outside the courthouse. The case involves charges of “injury” against Çeliksoy and “attempted murder” against Ahmet Furkan Ö., with the court continuing to keep the suspects in custody.

A separate violent episode occurred in Kayseri’s Kocasinan district when a man identified as M. A., described as having psychological problems, attacked worshippers during the yatsı prayer at Saraycık Mosque, killing Musa Y. and Zübeyir T. In Turhal, prosecutors have charged spouse Ş. K. with premeditated murder of husband Muhammed Köseoğlu after a domestic dispute. The court has ordered a forensic expert review of the shooting details and has kept the suspect detained pending trial.

The Turkish Supreme Court (Yargıtay) issued a precedent‑setting decision in an Afyonkarahisar family‑law case, ruling that a husband’s request for a DNA test to challenge paternity constitutes fault in a separation proceeding, though the case does not merit a divorce decree.
