COVAFAM ends 129-day Sonora protest after government agreement

The COVAFAM organization has ended its 129-day protest and encampment outside the Sonora State Congress following an agreement with the state government. The movement, which began on April 21, focused on securing early childhood education for children aged 0 to 6.

Key terms of the agreement include the allocation of funds to guarantee initial education through the Secretariat of Education and Culture. Additionally, a court-ordered payment of two million pesos is to be fulfilled before the end of 2026. The settlement also involves the dismissal of legal charges filed by the State Congress against seven members of the organization related to protests and street blockades.

The resolution concludes a 99-day hunger strike by the association’s lawyer, Jorge García. Representatives stated that they will maintain an active agenda with authorities to ensure the implementation of these commitments, including compliance with daycare standards and civil protection requirements.
