COVID-19 and influenza vaccination campaigns begin for autumn
Updated COVID-19 vaccines, adjusted for the circulating JN.1 variant, have become available in pharmacies as of early September. Health authorities recommend these vaccinations for high-risk groups, including the elderly, pregnant individuals, and those with pre-existing medical conditions, to prevent severe illness and reduce the risk of Long COVID.
In certain regions, such as Belgium, the High Health Council recommends autumn vaccinations for both influenza and COVID-19. Priority groups include individuals over 65, immunocompromised persons, healthcare workers, and those in close contact with vulnerable populations. COVID-19 vaccinations are provided free of charge to citizens, and residents can receive shots through general practitioners, nurses, or participating pharmacies.
While the availability of vaccines aligns with the start of the school and work season, some administrative shifts in recommendation bodies have caused uncertainty in other regions, such as the United States, regarding routine update processes and insurance coverage.
