COVID-19 cases rise in 2026 with reports of intense throat pain

COVID-19 activity is increasing in 2026, with rising case numbers reported in 48 U.S. states and elevated viral levels detected in wastewater. While hospitalization rates remain low, the World Health Organization (WHO) warns that SARS-CoV-2 continues to circulate globally and can cause severe illness, particularly in vulnerable populations.

Medical professionals are noting a specific symptom: intense throat pain. Dr. Thomas Russo, an infectious disease specialist at the University at Buffalo, reports that some patients describe the sensation as being like “razor blades in the throat,” though the intensity varies between individuals.

Other symptoms identified by the CDC and WHO include fever, chills, cough, fatigue, muscle aches, headaches, and congestion. Some patients also experience gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. While loss of taste and smell remains a known symptom, it does not occur in all cases.
