COVID-19 cases rise in Catalonia as virus overtakes influenza

COVID-19 has overtaken influenza as the most prevalent respiratory infection in Catalonia, according to data from the Public Health Agency of Catalonia. During the week of September 14 to 20, SARS-CoV-2 accounted for 29.6% of acute respiratory infection cases, followed by rhinovirus at 22.5% and influenza at 11.3%. In the pediatric population, COVID-19 positive cases also represent the majority at 18%.

In specific regions, the surge is particularly notable. In Lleida, the diagnostic rate in primary care reached 32 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a significant increase from previous weeks. The Alt Pirineu and Aran region saw an even sharper rise, with incidence multiplying sevenfold over three weeks to reach 35 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Epidemiologist Antoni Trilla noted that while this upward trend aligns with patterns seen in other parts of Europe, the situation does not yet constitute a full winter epidemic for respiratory viruses. Due to delays in vaccine production, the vaccination campaign for COVID-19 and influenza is scheduled to begin on October 5, prioritizing high-risk groups such as those over 65, residents in care homes, and individuals over 80.
