COVID-19 cases rise in Spain due to new variants and waning immunity

Spain is experiencing a notable increase in COVID-19 circulation. According to data from the Acute Respiratory Infection Surveillance System (SiVIRA), estimated incidence rose from 50.4 to 85 cases per 100,000 inhabitants between the weeks of September 7 and September 20. Positivity rates among primary care patients also increased from 19% to 25.8% during the same period.

Experts attribute this rise to a multifactorial combination of new virus variants, declining natural and vaccine-acquired immunity, and changes in social behavior. Medical professionals note that vaccine protection typically lasts between four and six months, leaving even previously vaccinated individuals susceptible. While the virus is circulating more widely, current data indicates that hospitalization rates have actually decreased from 1.2 to 0.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, suggesting the current trend is a resurgence in circulation rather than a wave of severe illness.

Health organizations recommend updated vaccinations, as current doses are being adapted to target newer strains, such as the XFG variant, to improve efficacy.
