COVID-19 cases surge in China and South Korea

COVID-19 cases are rising across East Asia, with significant increases reported in both China and South Korea. In China, the CDC reported approximately 522,000 new confirmed cases in July, representing a substantial increase compared to previous months. While the majority of these cases are reported as mild, the surge has prompted discussions regarding the accuracy of reported data and the potential for underreporting.

In South Korea, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) has noted a rise in respiratory virus detection. The COVID-19 detection rate reached 9.1% during the week of August 9–15, up from 3.2% in week 30. Hospitalizations have also increased, rising 2.4 times from 23 patients in week 30 to 56 patients in week 33.

Health authorities in South Korea expect the current wave to peak between late August and late September. However, officials project that the scale of this surge will remain below half of the peak levels seen last year. Experts advise high-risk groups, including the elderly and those with chronic illnesses, to maintain precautions such as wearing masks in enclosed spaces and practicing good hygiene.
