COVID-19 cases surpass flu in China; Vietnam health ministry warns

China's Center for Disease Control reported about 79,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in June, including 130 severe cases and one death. The weekly positive test rate rose to 16.3%, overtaking the 12.6% rate for influenza, making COVID-19 the leading respiratory pathogen detected in outpatient and emergency clinics. Experts cited summer heat, increased use of air‑conditioning and indoor gatherings as factors that may facilitate transmission.

Vietnam's Ministry of Health noted a recent uptick in patients seeking care for COVID‑19 but said there has been no abnormal increase in severe cases or deaths. The ministry highlighted the circulation of the Omicron sub‑variant NB.1.8.1 worldwide and warned that summer travel, crowded indoor spaces, and hot, humid weather raise the risk of spread for both COVID‑19 and seasonal flu. It urged the public to wear masks in crowded or enclosed places, practice hand hygiene, keep indoor environments ventilated, and seek medical advice if symptoms appear.
