COVID-19 overview: symptoms, transmission, and long-term effects

COVID-19 is a contagious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. The disease spread globally in January 2020, initiating a pandemic. Symptoms, which can appear one to fourteen days after exposure, often include fever, fatigue, cough, breathing difficulties, and loss of taste or smell.

Approximately one-third of infected individuals do not exhibit noticeable symptoms. Among those who do develop symptoms, 81% experience mild to moderate cases, 14% experience severe symptoms, and 5% face critical conditions such as respiratory failure or organ dysfunction. Older populations face a higher risk of severe illness.

Transmission occurs through respiratory particles, often in close proximity or via airborne particles in indoor settings, as well as through contact with contaminated surfaces. Individuals can remain contagious for up to 20 days. Some patients experience long-term effects known as long COVID, which can persist for months or years. Diagnostic testing includes RT-PCR, transcription-mediated amplification, and RT-LAMP.
