COVID-19: Overview of SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and symptoms
COVID-19 is a contagious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Following its global spread in January 2020, the disease resulted in a worldwide pandemic.
Symptoms typically include fever, fatigue, cough, breathing difficulties, and loss of taste or smell, appearing one to fourteen days after exposure. Approximately one-third of infected individuals do not exhibit noticeable symptoms. Among those who do develop symptoms, 81% experience mild to moderate cases, 14% experience severe symptoms such as hypoxia, and 5% develop critical symptoms including respiratory failure or shock.
Transmission occurs through infectious particles inhaled or through contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth. Risk is elevated in close proximity or indoors where airborne particles can remain suspended. Individuals may remain contagious for up to 20 days, even without showing symptoms.
