COVID-19: Overview of SARS-CoV-2 symptoms and transmission

COVID-19 is a contagious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. The disease spread globally in January 2020, initiating a worldwide pandemic. Symptoms typically appear within one to fourteen days of exposure and can include fever, fatigue, cough, breathing difficulties, and loss of taste or smell.

At least one-third of infected individuals do not exhibit noticeable symptoms. Among symptomatic patients, 81% experience mild to moderate symptoms, 14% develop severe symptoms, and 5% face critical conditions such as respiratory failure or organ dysfunction. Older populations face a higher risk of severe illness.

Transmission occurs through respiratory particles or contact with contaminated surfaces. The risk of infection is elevated in close proximity to others or in indoor settings where airborne particles may remain suspended. Individuals can remain contagious for up to 20 days, including those who are asymptomatic.
