COVID-19 pandemic disease overview and global impact

COVID-19 is a contagious disease caused by the SARS‑CoV‑2 virus. The infection spread worldwide in January 2020, leading to the COVID‑19 pandemic. Typical symptoms include fever, fatigue, cough, breathing difficulties, loss of smell and loss of taste, though about a third of infected people remain asymptomatic. Among those who develop symptoms, roughly 81 % experience mild to moderate illness, 14 % develop severe disease such as dyspnea or extensive lung involvement, and 5 % become critically ill with respiratory failure, shock or multiorgan dysfunction. Older individuals are at higher risk of severe outcomes. The virus spreads primarily through respiratory droplets and smaller airborne particles, especially in indoor settings, and infected persons can remain contagious for up to 20 days. Multiple vaccines have received approval and are being administered in many countries, supporting mass vaccination campaigns alongside public‑health measures like physical distancing, mask use and ventilation.

Long‑term effects, termed “long COVID,” have been observed in some patients, prompting ongoing multi‑year studies of organ damage and other sequelae.
