COVID-19 is a contagious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Following its worldwide spread in January 2020, the disease resulted in a global pandemic.
Symptoms vary and may include fever, fatigue, cough, breathing difficulties, and loss of taste or smell. While symptoms typically appear within one to fourteen days of exposure, at least one-third of infected individuals do not develop noticeable symptoms. Among symptomatic patients, 81% experience mild to moderate symptoms, 14% develop severe symptoms, and 5% face critical symptoms such as respiratory failure or shock. Older populations face a higher risk of severe illness.
Transmission occurs through respiratory particles, often in close proximity or via airborne particles in indoor settings, as well as through contact with contaminated surfaces. Individuals can remain contagious for up to 20 days. Long-term effects, known as long COVID, can persist for months or years, and multi-year studies regarding these effects are ongoing.
