Symptoms vary and can include fever, fatigue, cough, breathing difficulties, and loss of taste or smell. Symptoms typically appear within one to fourteen days of exposure. Among those who do show symptoms, 81% experience mild to moderate cases, 14% develop severe symptoms, and 5% face critical conditions such as respiratory failure or organ dysfunction. Older populations face a higher risk of severe illness.
Transmission occurs through respiratory particles, often in close proximity or via airborne particles in indoor settings, as well as through contact with contaminated surfaces. Individuals can remain contagious for up to 20 days. Diagnostic testing includes RT-PCR, transcription-mediated amplification, and RT-LAMP methods.
