COVID-19 is a contagious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. The disease spread globally in January 2020, initiating a worldwide pandemic.
Symptoms vary and can include fever, fatigue, cough, breathing difficulties, and loss of taste or smell. Symptoms typically appear within one to fourteen days of exposure. Approximately one-third of infected individuals do not develop noticeable symptoms.
Among those who do show symptoms, 81% experience mild to moderate cases, 14% develop severe symptoms such as hypoxia, and 5% face critical conditions including respiratory failure or organ dysfunction. Older populations face a higher risk of severe illness. Long-term effects, known as long COVID, can persist for months or years. Transmission occurs through respiratory particles or contact with contaminated surfaces, and individuals may remain contagious for up to 20 days.
