COVID-19 Surge Overwhelms Hospitals in Taiwan and Mainland China

In Kaohsiung, Taiwan, the health bureau reported that outpatient visits for COVID‑19 in week 29 rose to 1,493, a 121.5% increase from the previous week. Officials warned that symptoms of COVID‑19, flu and common colds are similar, urging the public to use rapid tests, seek medical evaluation, and follow doctors’ guidance on antiviral treatment to capture the “golden period” and reduce severe outcomes. The bureau also emphasized safe medication practices, vaccination, and mask use.

On the Chinese mainland, the national positivity rate for COVID‑19 tests exceeded 20% for the first time, with emergency departments reported as “packed to the floor.” Doctors described severe bed shortages and a sharp rise in antiviral drug consumption. The surge affected all age groups, with the highest rates in southern provinces, and cases of severe complications such as myocarditis were reported. Health authorities highlighted the need for heightened protection measures and warned of limited drug supplies.
