Covo Mayor bans burka and niqab in municipal buildings
The Mayor of Covo, Andrea Capelletti of the Lega party, has issued an urgent decree banning the wearing of burkas and niqabs within municipal buildings. The ban applies to the town hall, the library, and sports halls, as well as to municipal events with controlled access.
The 60-day regulation follows reports of individuals wearing full-face veils near local businesses and public offices. Mayor Capelletti stated that while no one is being judged for their culture or faith, the measure is necessary to ensure security and the ability to identify individuals entering public buildings.
The municipality emphasized that the decree is not based on religious, cultural, ethnic, or national affiliation, nor does it assign inherent danger to the individuals involved. In instances where identity checks are required, the decree allows for the temporary uncovering of the face.
