Cowboy boots make a high‑fashion comeback on global runways

Cowboy boots, originally a durable work shoe from the 1800s American prairie, were designed with a high shaft, angled heel and pointed toe to protect riders. Early on they became a status symbol among ranch owners and were popularised by western films and stars such as Gene Autry and John Wayne. Designers like Nudie Cohn later added rhinestone‑covered extravagance, and the 1980s “urban cowboy” era broadened their appeal.

The boots are now experiencing a major revival in the autumn collections of major fashion houses. Swedish label Acne Studios, celebrating its 30th anniversary, showcases tall cowboy boots paired with suits under creative director Jonny Johansson. French houses Isabel Marant and Bottega Veneta also reinterpret the style with a European finish while retaining its rugged roots. The trend is highlighted by the newly released coffee‑table book *Rough and Ready – A History of Cowboy Boots* by shoe‑history expert Elizabeth Semmelhack, published by Rizzoli and priced at about 400 kr.

The resurgence underscores how a historic workwear item continues to influence contemporary high fashion across continents.
