Cowes Week sailing regatta adapts to strong winds, race schedule altered

On Thursday, the fifth day of Cowes Week, strong winds reaching about 30 knots forced race officials to bring forward class starts and cancel races for smaller boats and the X One Design fleet. Larger yachts continued, and the historic Britannia Cup was claimed by the Hong‑Kong‑owned TP52 Beau Geste.

The day also featured tight battles across other classes: Dauntless retook the lead in the Daring class, Jennie XXX won the Sonata class, Lady Khumbu moved into the J/70 lead, and Sir Ben Ainslie sailed his Athena Pathway youth crew. Performance cruiser categories remained closely contested.

The previous day, Cowes Week’s fourth day, saw the Island Sailing Club host its popular Taittinger Lobster Lunch and an evening social, providing members and guests a relaxed setting to watch the racing on the Solent.
