Cowichan Lake wildfire burns in steep terrain

An out-of-control wildfire was discovered on Thursday, September 17, on the west side of Bald Mountain at Cowichan Lake. As of Friday morning, the blaze was estimated to cover 0.57 hectares and is situated in steep, challenging terrain within Bald Mountain Park, located between the Town of Lake Cowichan and Youbou.

The BC Wildfire Service believes the fire was human-caused. Both ground crews and aviation resources have been deployed to combat the flames. While smoke is visible in surrounding communities and firefighting aircraft may be seen near the peninsula, officials state the fire does not currently threaten public safety or critical infrastructure. No evacuation alerts or orders have been issued at this time.

Investigations into the cause may involve multiple agencies, including the BC Wildfire Service, the Compliance and Enforcement Branch, and the RCMP. Although parts of Vancouver Island have received recent rainfall, the Cowichan Valley remains extremely dry, increasing the risk of wildfire activity.
