British Columbia housing: New shelter policies and accessible housing expansion

The Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) has approved a new Emergency Shelter and Supportive Housing Siting Policy. The policy establishes criteria for future temporary use permits, rezoning, and public land development. Rather than naming specific sites, it evaluates locations based on access to transportation, health services, social services, and proximity to amenities like parks and schools.

In Greater Victoria, the Disability Alliance BC is expanding its Right Fit Program to the South Island. This initiative matches wheelchair users with accessible housing and independent living supports to prevent homelessness and unsafe living conditions. The program uses a standardized checklist to assess housing features such as door openings, grab bars, and automatic doors.

Regarding rental markets, Abbotsford remains the most affordable rental city in British Columbia, with average asking prices holding steady at $1,744. While most of the province saw average rental prices rise, Abbotsford recorded a 12.4 per cent decline in annual rental prices compared to the previous year.
