Cosmic Crusader wins $6 million Cox Plate at Flemington
West Australian horse Cosmic Crusader secured a major upset victory in the $6 million Cox Plate held at Flemington Racecourse. Ridden by jockey William Pike and owned by Bob Peters, the win marks a significant achievement for the duo, often referred to as the ‘Wizards from the West’. Cosmic Crusader joined the ranks of legendary winners like Northerly following this performance.
The race featured several high-profile storylines, including trainer Chris Waller’s pursuit of a seventh title and jockey James McDonald’s attempt at a fifth consecutive win. Despite the heavy expectations, Cosmic Crusader stormed home to defeat Birdman, who finished second, and Aeliana, ridden by McDonald, who took third.
The event was notable for being the first time the prestigious weight-for-age race was conducted at Flemington. Other prominent figures in the race included trainer Gai Waterhouse, whose favorite Sir Delius finished sixth, and jockeys Rachel King and Jamie Melham, who were competing to become the first female jockeys to win the event.
