Cox to build Latin America’s largest desalination plant in Mexico
The Spanish company Cox has been awarded the contract to build what will be the largest desalination plant in Latin America, located in Rosarito, Baja California. The project, promoted by Mexico’s National Water Commission (Conagua) as part of the National Water Plan, involves a total investment of $304 million.
The facility is designed to address water scarcity in the Tijuana, Playas de Rosarito, and Ensenada metropolitan areas, serving approximately two million people. The first phase of construction will have an initial capacity of 2,200 liters per second, providing about 190 million liters of potable water daily. Once fully completed, the plant is expected to reach a capacity of 4,400 liters per second, producing over 380,000 cubic meters of water per day.
Using reverse osmosis technology, the plant will provide a critical water source independent of the Colorado River, helping to mitigate the effects of droughts and overexploitation in the region. The construction period is estimated to be three years.
