Coxim declares state of emergency following severe flooding

The municipality of Coxim, located approximately 250 km from Campo Grande, is set to declare a state of emergency following severe flooding caused by heavy rains. Mayor Edilson Magro confirmed the measure on Saturday, noting that a full assessment of damages is expected by Tuesday.

In the Jardim Alvorada neighborhood, specifically on Rua Cândido Mariano, water reached waist height for several residents, affecting approximately ten families. Victims reported significant losses of furniture and household appliances. Residents attributed the flooding to poor drainage and obstructed pipes, with some noting that recent construction may have hindered water runoff.

The Secretary of Works, Ivaldo Lopes, stated that the city is aware of the situation and plans to perform maintenance and clear drainage pipes next week. Meanwhile, the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) warns of continued unstable weather, with potential thunderstorms and heavy rainfall expected to persist through Wednesday. Mato Grosso do Sul remains under an orange alert for storms, with risks of high winds and hail.
