Coxsackie virus outbreak reported at Guadalajara preschool
Health authorities in Jalisco have confirmed six cases of Coxsackie virus among students at a preschool in the Oblatos neighborhood of Guadalajara. While the Secretaría de Salud Jalisco is monitoring the outbreak, parents at the Estefanía Castañeda preschool report a much higher number of infections, estimating between 25 and 30 children have shown symptoms since September 9.
Symptoms reported by affected children include fever, sore throat, and painful blisters on the hands, feet, and tongue. Parents have expressed concern regarding the school's facilities, noting that students were moved to a cramped, reduced space due to structural cracks in their regular classroom, which may have facilitated the spread of the virus.
Coxsackie is an enterovirus that often causes hand-foot-and-mouth disease, primarily affecting infants and young children. It spreads through respiratory secretions, saliva, direct contact, or contaminated objects. Health officials recommend reinforcing handwashing and hygiene measures, noting that while there is no specific treatment, care should focus on hydration and symptom relief.
