Ayotzinapa: Families protest 12 years after student disappearances
On the 12th anniversary of the disappearance of 43 Ayotzinapa students, families and students held a series of protests in Mexico City and Guerrero. Demonstrators marched from the Angel of Independence toward the Zócalo, while others gathered at the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) and the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN).
Protesters expressed outrage over a recent CNDH recommendation that suggests insufficient evidence to hold the Mexican Army institutionally responsible. Families and their lawyer, Isidoro Vicario Aguilar, are demanding the release of 853 military intelligence files that could clarify the events of September 2014. The lawyer has urged the Supreme Court to reject injunctions filed by the Army to block the release of these documents.
During the demonstrations, students from the Raúl Isidro Burgos Rural Normal School launched homemade explosives at the 27th Infantry Battalion in Iguala, Guerrero. In Mexico City, authorities deployed metal barriers and fences around major landmarks, including the National Palace and the Supreme Court, to manage the crowds. Supreme Court President Hugo Aguilar Ortiz met with the families and committed to an objective analysis of the case files and pending injunctions.
