Coyote defense strategies for home and property protection

Effective home defense against coyotes requires a multifaceted, layered approach focused on making properties less attractive and accessible. Key strategies include installing solid fencing at least six feet high, with the bottom buried at least 12 inches deep to prevent digging.

Eliminating attractants is a critical preventative measure. This involves securing garbage cans, removing pet food from outdoor areas, cleaning up fallen fruit, and using enclosed compost bins. Other deterrents include motion-activated lights, loud noises, or water sprays, as well as the use of livestock guardian dogs for those with animals to protect.

While some attempt to use urine as a repellent to mimic the scent of rival predators, this method is considered largely unreliable and inconsistent. Its effectiveness is highly dependent on the source of the urine, environmental conditions, and the coyote's ability to become habituated to the scent.
