Cozumel considered for potential dolphin sanctuary in Quintana Roo

Authorities and environmental specialists are evaluating Cozumel, Quintana Roo, as a potential site for a new dolphin sanctuary. The project is currently in a preliminary phase, with no final decisions made regarding the specific location, animal capacity, infrastructure, or operational timeline.

Óscar Rébora Aguilera, the state Secretary of Ecology and Environment, stated that the project's viability depends on technical and environmental studies. These assessments will determine if the island can guarantee animal welfare and whether the sanctuary should utilize existing facilities or require new construction. Marine fauna specialist Elizabeth Soria emphasized that any sanctuary must meet strict requirements, including water quality, space, nutrition, and veterinary care.

The proposal comes amid growing concerns regarding the welfare of dolphins in the region. Environmentalists have raised alarms about the health of captive dolphins in Quintana Roo, specifically noting reports from Puerto Aventuras where approximately 40 dolphins are estimated to be ill. This has intensified the debate over the management of marine mammals in local tourism-related facilities.
