Cozumel cruise arrivals decline during low season

Cozumel is experiencing a decline in cruise ship arrivals as the region enters its low season. According to data from the Administración Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo (APIQROO), the reduction in vessels and passengers follows cyclical market patterns where shipping companies reassign fleets to other international itineraries during late summer and early autumn.

Statistical trends show a gradual descent from January, which saw 161 cruises and over 542,000 visitors. June recorded the fewest arrivals with 84 vessels, while August saw 88. Although July showed a slight recovery with 92 cruises, the first week of September is projected to see only 15 arrivals.

This seasonal contraction impacts the local economy, specifically reducing demand for land transportation, artisanal commerce, snorkeling tours, restaurants, and beach clubs. Despite the current slowdown, APIQROO Director General Vagner Elbiorn Vega previously indicated that the island could potentially close the year with 1,374 arrivals, which would represent an increase of 74 vessels compared to 2025.
