Cozumel FPMC continues coral restoration in Chankanaab

The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC), through its Directorate of Conservation and Environmental Education (CEA), is continuing its coral restoration program at Chankanaab Natural Park. The initiative involves the care of approximately 1,500 coral fragments, with a primary focus on recovering the elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata) and monitoring the reproduction of species such as Orbicella faveolata.

In coordination with the organization Oceanus A.C., coral fragments are maintained on underwater tree-like and grid structures. Maintenance tasks, led by natural resource manager Antonio Chalé, involve removing algae and debris from both the structures and the colonies to promote growth and survival.

The FPMC is inviting community volunteers to participate in these conservation efforts. Maintenance sessions are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 09:00 to 12:00. Participation is open to individuals aged 15 and older who possess snorkeling skills or diving certifications, including students of marine biology, biological sciences, and tourism.
