Cozumel Hosts Free Conference on Bats and Ecosystem Services

The Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel (FPMC) will hold a free public conference titled “Entre alas y ecos: una ventana al fascinante mundo de los murciélagos de México” on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, from 19:00 to 21:00 at the Centro de Conservación y Educación Ambiental (CCEA) in Cozumel’s industrial zone. Biologist Jorge Alemán, a specialist in chiropteran research, will present the lecture and lead a hands‑on practice session that lets attendees observe bats up close.

Organizers aim to demystify common myths about bats and highlight their essential ecological roles—pollinating plants, dispersing seeds and controlling insect populations. Rafael Chacón Díaz, director of the CCEA, and Juanita Alonso Marrufo, FPMC’s general director, said the event supports Quintana Roo’s “Nuevo Acuerdo por el Bienestar y Desarrollo” by fostering scientific literacy and community involvement in biodiversity conservation.
