Cozumel scientific initiatives focus on insect research and monarch butterfly monitoring

The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) is advancing scientific research and community engagement through several biodiversity initiatives on Cozumel Island.

During the “Bichos Night” event, researchers discussed the ecological and medical importance of various insects. Studies conducted at the Punta Sur Ecotourism Park include investigations into mosquitoes and the insects associated with Chagas disease. Researchers are working to determine the feeding habits of these insects and assess potential risks to human health, noting that current findings place them primarily in jungle areas. The event also highlighted the ecological role of ants and the cultural significance of Melipona bees.

Additionally, the FPMC has launched its third consecutive year of monitoring monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) in the region. Following 220 sightings and 60 photographic records in the previous period, recent sightings suggest the island may serve as both a migratory path and a site for the species to complete its life cycle. Documentation has included eggs, larvae, and pupae, even within urban areas. The foundation is encouraging citizen science through the iNaturalist platform to help track the species' presence and development.
