CPEC 2.0 expands focus to industrialization and technology
The second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC 2.0) is shifting focus from heavy infrastructure and energy toward industrialization, agriculture, technology, and regional connectivity. This new phase aims to drive economic growth, job creation, and investment across Pakistan.
Xinjiang plays a critical role in this expansion, serving as a logistics platform. The Khunjerab Pass has become a vital trade gateway, with year-round operations beginning in December 2024 to facilitate continuous land-based trade. Xinjiang’s expanded transport network, including significant increases in railway and highway mileage, supports this connectivity.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed the strength of the bilateral relationship, noting that CPEC 2.0 is advancing rapidly. Key objectives include the development of Gwadar as a regional trade hub and deeper cooperation in science, technology, and information sectors to strengthen Pakistan’s economic base.
