Brazil celebrates Teacher's Day amid workforce growth and professional challenges
October 15 marks Teacher's Day in Brazil, a date rooted in an 1827 imperial decree. The celebration highlights the fundamental role of educators in social transformation and democracy, noting the legacy of pioneers like Antonieta de Barros, who established the holiday in Santa Catarina years before its national officialization in 1963.
Data from Inep shows the teaching workforce in Brazil's basic education has grown by approximately 10% over the last decade, reaching 2.4 million professionals. Women continue to dominate the sector, representing nearly 79% of teachers.
Despite these milestones, the profession faces significant challenges. In Acre, the Sinteac union reports that over a thousand educators are on leave due to health issues, primarily related to mental and emotional distress caused by professional devaluation and school violence. Discussions surrounding the holiday often focus on the need for better remuneration, improved infrastructure, and the ongoing struggle against the privatization of education.
