CPKC Stadium to expand capacity for international sporting events

CPKC Stadium, the world’s first professional soccer stadium built exclusively for a women’s team, is set to undergo a major expansion. Following approval of a development agreement by the local City Council, the Kansas City Current’s home venue will increase its capacity from approximately 11,000 to over 18,000 seats.

The expansion is part of a larger $1.4 billion revitalization project for the Berkeley waterfront, which includes new commercial areas, parking, and urban infrastructure. Funding for the broader project will primarily come from private investors and local sales tax revenue.

The goal of the expansion is to qualify the stadium to host major international events, including the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Men’s Rugby World Cup. While the development plan has been approved, the Kansas City municipal government and the Kansas City Current have not yet announced an official start date or a finalized construction timeline.
