CPVC president proposes task force to address compensation delays

The Commission for the Protection of Crime Victims (CPVC) is currently unable to meet legal deadlines for processing compensation requests. Carlos Farinha, the president of the CPVC, admitted that hundreds of requests remain pending due to a lack of human resources and difficulties in coordinating with other entities.

To address the backlog, Farinha has proposed the creation of a temporary “task force” involving various organizations, including the Portuguese Bar Association (Ordem dos Advogados). The goal is to establish a structured response that could eventually allow for decisions to be made within a one-month timeframe, a significant improvement over current delays.

The commission focuses primarily on providing social solidarity and financial support to victims of domestic violence and violent crimes, including human trafficking, kidnapping, and abduction. The financial assistance is intended to help victims mitigate the impact of crime on their quality of life.
