Crafting Apps releases open-source alternatives to Adobe software
A new suite of open-source applications, developed by Crafting Apps, aims to replicate the functionality of major Adobe software. Built using the Rust programming language, these tools—including PhotoCraft (Photoshop alternative), VectorCraft (Illustrator alternative), and FilmCraft (Premiere Pro alternative)—are designed to run natively on Windows, macOS, and Linux, as well as in web browsers via WebAssembly.
The software is currently in a release candidate (RC) stage and is released under Apache-2.0 and MIT licenses, making it free for both personal and commercial use. Key features include local-only file processing to ensure privacy, support for AI agent automation via CLI and MCP servers, and the ability to open complex file types like PSDs while maintaining layers and masks.
While the tools demonstrate significant capability in replicating professional workflows, users are cautioned that the software is still in early development. Current limitations include a lack of Japanese language support and incomplete feature sets compared to the original professional suites.
